The Havergal College Upper School is one of 11 innovative copper building projects from the United States and Canada to be announced as a winner in the Copper Development Association’s annual North American Copper in Architecture (NACIA) awards program. Launched in 2008, the NACIA awards program recognizes copper’s versatile use in building construction and promotes its innovative applications.

Winning projects represented a wide variety of design styles and buildings, including educational buildings, government facilities, and churches – all of which were executed with remarkable detail, creativity, and craftsmanship.

‎“‎The 2022 NACIA winners exhibit copper’s endless range of applications through innovation in new and historical restoration projects,” ‎said Larry Peters, Project Manager & Architectural Applications Specialist for CDA. “Answering the growing demand to meet environmental goals using sustainable building materials, the 2022 winners demonstrate a perfect balance of maximizing green materials and longevity, creating architecture masterpieces for generations to come.”

The copper elements of the building complement the woodland and ravine area that surround the campus grounds with a colour that will continue to evolve for many years. The new expansion included 11,354 sq. ft. of copper cladding manufactured by Ontario Panelization. The cladding is made of 16-ounce copper pans with 2″ single-lock standing seams which add a textural pattern to the facade. The pan profiles included a sprung edge to help reduce oil-canning and allow for expansion and contraction of the copper during varying weather conditions. Copper can be formed into many shapes and this was helpful for the continuation of the copper for use in the parapets. Copper has played a role in architecture for thousands of years and the choice to use it in the addition of this historical century college added a distinguishable feature to this modern project.

The 11 winning projects were selected by a panel of judges based on the presence and use of copper and the significance of the project at hand – whether historic, modern, or otherwise. A complete list of winners can be found below with further details and photos available on copper.org.
